A rare opportunity to own a piece of old Hilo in the heart of historic Reed’s Island. Built in 1924, 225 Kaiulani Street is a remarkable early 20th-century residence set along 1.4 acres along Waikapu Stream. Thoughtfully restored while preserving the craftsmanship and character that makes the home so distinctive, this is a property that feels connected to another era of Hilo and yet is waiting for its new chapter to begin. Inside, beautifully refinished Douglas fir floors flow through gracious living spaces framed by substantial millwork, built in cabinetry, light-inspired windows, awnings and dramatic exposed beam ceilings. The living room is anchored by a massive lava rock fireplace with a mahogany mantel, while a library, formal dining room with built ins, butler’s pantry and large bedrooms reflect the scale and craftsmanship of the home’s original design. The kitchen was remodeled approximately five years ago with careful consideration for the architecture of the home, combining classic cabinetry and period-inspired details with the conveniences of a modern kitchen. A distinctive bath continues the vintage aesthetic with hexagonal tile, rich decorative tile work including an expansive shower, tub and pedestal sinks. In the primary suite, the bathroom has undergone a new remodel leaving the original time period tub and adding a new shower, new fixtures and custom made-vanity. Recent improvements include a newly paved asphalt driveway, new roof, new gutters and downspouts. Carpet was removed and the floors were refinished. Wallpaper was extensively removed with new paint throughout. Many of the original light fixtures have been restored, are in working order and remain in place. The entire electrical system has been replaced although the old nob and tube still exists for nostalgia in the attic. The exterior trellis and awnings have been restored; all significant investments made with an eye toward preserving rather than replacing the home’s architecture.
